雜耍演出所操控的物件稱為道具，其中馬戲技藝使用扯鈴、惡魔棍、雪茄盒操控、吞火和接觸技等等。

最為人所知的雜耍型式為丟擲技，以手部技巧連續性地將不同物件投、擲、拋至空中，並且接住，創造出視覺上華麗的效果。

英文中，物件操控雜耍「juggling」一詞是由中古英文的「jogelen」而來，即以戲法娛樂觀眾；而那又源自法文的「jongleur」、古法文的「jogler」一直到拉丁文的「ioculr（戲弄）」和「iocus（玩笑）」。
